Millard airport approach towers are frangible. They are engineered to be fully rigid when they need to be but safely collapse if accidentally struck by a plane. There have been at least two incidents at Canadian airports in which Millard towers saved lives. Millard towers are non-corrosive and stand up to high winds and extreme icing. A patented design creates a hinging effect between the tower's vertical supports and its lattices, which upon forceful impact, allows the tower to buckle in the direction of the impacting aircraft, so the plane can fly safely over it. Millard aviation towers can be used to support wind socks, approach lighting and Instrument Landing Systems (ILS).
